The Importance of Cultivating Healthy Work Culture

No matter how small or large your business, focusing on creating a healthy work culture will help it go farther and prosper. While the phrase “work culture” often conjures images of tech startups with co-working desks and the freedom to come and go as you please, the concept is actually much simpler: Healthy work culture is about ensuring that the attitudes and values of the owner/CEO align with the company and your employees. Building a positive culture can take time and effort but the benefits far outweigh the effort. Learn more, below.

When you cultivate a healthy work culture, you’ll see major benefits.

The Importance of Cultivating Healthy Work Culture

Why does corporate culture matter?

By defining your company’s values and attitudes, you’ll be able to attract talented employees who are personally driven to make the company succeed. Employees in businesses with an unhealthy culture are focused on working for their individual needs (such as health insurance) whereas in a healthy culture, employees are valued for their role in the organization which in turn inspires each employee to work toward the greater interest. We recently spoke with Chip Lewis about how important it has been to the success of his company, PSA Financial, to focus on recruiting and retaining talent who fit in with the company’s culture. The biggest benefits include:

Retention

Engaged employees are ones who want to stick with a company. If employees don’t feel like they buy in to the company’s values (either because they don’t align or because the company hasn’t defined them), then they are much less likely to want to stay in the long run.

Productivity

A healthy work culture boosts morale by making employees feel valued and this, in turn, encourages employees to work harder and more efficiently.

Quality

When a company values quality and its employees buy in to this value, staff members will be dedicated to producing work that meets company standards.

Where to start

The culture of a business starts with the owner and the CEO. They set the vision for the business and create the values and attitudes by which they want the business to run and operate. But more importantly they need to set the example and model the culture and values of the business. If the leader does not do what s/he expects of others, the employees will not do them either.
